Surfside Beach Boondocking - Surfside Beach, Texas
Free beach camping...I'm there!! Free beach camping with no neighbors...I'm definitely there!
Surfside Beach is located on the strand outside of Freeport, Texas, about an hour away from the massive city of Houston. If you want to hear the waves crashing and feel the sand between your toes without huge crowds, Surfside is the place to be. The beach is pet friendly, too!
If you're able to pull yourself away from the relaxing beach, there are endless activities you have to check out. Take a bike ride down to the jetty and watch the fishermen pull in their daily catch. Take a ride over to Sea Center Texas, a free marine museum with an aquarium and a boardwalk that lets you get up close and personal with the local wetlands. Cruise on over to Galveston Island and be amazed at the beach houses before grabbing a bite to eat at Bubba Gumps of course! If you're feeling really frisky, take a stroll over to Houston and check out the Houston Museum of Natural Science...this place is really amazing and it rivals the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in D.C.
Positives: Um, free beach camping...need I say more?? Pet friendly location with neighbors so far away, you'd never know they're there. For my fellow remote workers, cell data was great, even with video meetings.
Negatives: Wind and salt water are going to be your biggest enemies when boondocking on the beach. We stayed at Surfside Beach for a week and had sand in every crevice of the RV and rust on most of the metal. It's still worth it in my opinion, just face the door of your RV away from the ocean. There are very few places where you can have this amount of beachfront space for free. There is no water or dump, but we found that the local RV parks will let you dump for a fee.
